Plenty of salons, cafés and studios run their whole business from an Instagram profile. It works, up to a point. Then it quietly starts to cost them customers they never knew they had.
People who search do not search Instagram
When someone types "hairdresser near me" or "Steuerberater Zürich" into Google, Instagram profiles barely show up. Google shows websites and Google Business Profiles. If you have neither, you are invisible to the people with the strongest intent to buy, the ones actively looking right now.
You do not own your Instagram
The algorithm decides who sees your posts, and it changes without warning. Accounts get hacked or suspended. A website on your own domain is the one place online that you fully control, and it keeps working whether or not you posted this week.
A feed is a bad place to find facts
Opening hours, prices, the address, how to book, whether you take card payments: on Instagram these are buried in highlights, captions and DMs. A customer who has to message you to ask a basic question often just picks somebody else. A good website answers those questions in the first screen.
Trust, especially for bigger decisions
For a coffee, a nice feed is enough. For a wedding venue, an accountant, a renovation or a course, people want to see that a real, established business is behind the photos. A clear website with your services, your team and your contact details does that in a way a grid of posts cannot.
How the two work together
- Instagram builds attention and shows personality.
- The link in your bio sends that attention to a page built to convert: book, call, order, visit.
- Your website and Google Business Profile catch everyone who never saw your Instagram at all.
Your website does not have to be big. For many small businesses a single, well-made page with services, prices, hours, location and a booking button is enough. What matters is that it exists, loads fast on a phone, and shows up when people search.
