A website that nobody finds is a brochure in a drawer. The good news: for small businesses, the cause is almost always on this list. Work through it in order.
1. Google does not know the site exists yet
New sites can take days or weeks to appear. Speed it up by adding the site to Google Search Console (free) and submitting your sitemap. Search Console also tells you exactly which pages are indexed and which are not, and why.
2. Something is telling Google to stay away
A surprising number of sites launch with a "noindex" setting left over from development, or a robots.txt file that blocks search engines. Website builders often have a checkbox like "hide from search engines". Check it is off.
3. Your pages do not say what you do, or where
Google matches pages to searches by their content. If your homepage title is "Home" and the text says "Welcome to our world of passion", Google has nothing to work with. Say it plainly: what you do, and in which city. "Dog grooming in Winterthur" beats "Where pets feel at home".
4. Everything is hidden in images
Menus as PDFs, prices inside photos, text baked into graphics: Google cannot read these well, and neither can customers on slow phones. Put important text on the page as real text.
5. The site is slow or broken on mobile
Most local searches happen on phones. If your site takes several seconds to load or the layout breaks on a small screen, people leave, and Google notices. Compress images, drop heavy plugins, and test the site on your own phone over mobile data.
6. No Google Business Profile, or an incomplete one
For local searches, the map listings often matter more than the website itself. If you have not claimed your profile, start there. We wrote a short guide to Google Business Profile.
Be patient, then measure
After fixing the basics, give it a few weeks. Search Console will show which searches you appear for and how many people click. That is your baseline, and from there improvement is steady work: better pages, more reviews, links from local directories and partners.
If you would rather someone checked all of this for you, book a call. Search visibility is part of every site we build.
